Google Pixel 4a vs iPhone SE vs OnePlus Nord: How does the Google Phone hold up against its competition?
Google Pixel 4a has been launched in the US and a few other international markets. The company has confirmed that the Pixel 4a will come to India in October. While the official pricing is unknown, we can expect Google to price the Pixel 4a between Rs 30,000 and Rs 35,000.
There are several smartphones available in India within that price range. However, the bigger competition for Google comes from the likes of OnePlus and Apple. The recently-launched smartphones like the OnePlus Nord (Review) and iPhone SE 2020 have been the talk of the tech town for their respective specifications or features.
Google Pixel 4a’s strong suit is its camera which it borrows from the premium Pixel 4. The main camera has a 12.2MP sensor with support for Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS). While a single camera setup may be questionable, one needs to keep in mind that Google’s camera prowess lies in the software and not the hardware.
The OnePlus Nord tries to be an all-rounder smartphone between the price range of Rs 25,000 and Rs 30,000. It packs some slid specs like a 90Hz AMOLED screen, a Snapdragon 765G processor with up to 12GB RAM and a 4,115 mAh battery with 30T WARP charging. These specifications surely make the Pixel 4a look weak against the Nord. However, in our review, we have shown that Nord’s quad-camera setup needs some work.
Going by Google’s track record, if the Pixel 4a’s camera is as good as what we got with the Pixel 3a (review), Nord will have stiff competition in the camera department.
However, the biggest advantage for the Nord, other than its specs, is the price. The highest-end storage model is likely to be more affordable than the Pixel 4a. Considering how price sensitive the Indian smartphone consumer is, the Nord is likely to ‘OnePlus’ the Pixel 4a.
The other challenger for the Google Pixel is the iPhone SE 2020 in India. The Apple iPhone SE 2020 starts at Rs 42,500 in India. You get a 4.7-inch screen with the Home Button for the Touch ID, a 12MP rear camera and most importantly, the A13 Bionic chip found on the flagship iPhone 11 series (iPhone 11 Pro Review).
The Pixel 4a may have an edge over the relatively-affordable iPhone SE with a bigger display in a similar form factor and the camera, especially with the Night Mode that Apple decided to skip on the iPhone SE.
iPhone SE 2020 will certainly one-up the Pixel 4a with its performance unit. The A13 Bionic is far superior and efficient in terms of performance compared to even the flagship Snapdragon 8xx series processors.
Let’s not forget the likes of OnePlus 8, Realme X50 Pro (Review), Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite (Review) that offer flagship killer specifications.
The Pixel 4a is for a niche audience here in India that wants one of the best smartphone cameras but are okay with an average performance unit for the price. It is also for someone who wants the best of Google features in a smartphone, just like Google calls the Pixel 4a - the 'everything you love about Google' phone
The price of Pixel 4a in India will be a key factor in deciding if it will be a flop or a hit in India
